Directors' Song (written by Yvonne King)

(sung by Robyn, Janzell, Yvonne, Judy & Candice to cast, crew and their families at the Cast Party on 5/19/12)

We got the scripts and then the cast with music so sublime.
And nest we got the soloist with voices so divine.
Our costumes, so authentic, and the scenery so real,
We thought that we were singing in the Abby.

We climbed the Alps with the Von Trapps and loved to hear them sing.
And even when the Nazis came, we felt a little sting.
But through it all we loved our show and all who had a part.
And never, ever once did we feel crabby!

INTERLUDE:  (Sung to JUDY HUT without her knowing we were going to do it).

(spoken)  We'd like to say a word about Sister Hut!
                            Judy's above the cut!!

(Sung)    How do you find a way to just say, "Thank You"?
How do we let you know that you're the best?
How do you find a word that means director?
A timeless, and inspireist, who's the best.
Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her.
Many a thing she ought to understand.
But how do you make her stay and listen to all you say?
How do you praise the leader of our band?
How do you fine a word that means director?
How do you hold perfection in your hand?

Rehearsals came and time did pass, at times we felt aghast!
Especially when Performances were coming on so fast!
Our children in the chorus, Oh so innocent and sweet,
Provided for our show a special tr-eat!

But now our show is over and our lives are so routine,
But memories of what we did still stay within our dreams.
To each of you we give our thanks for every job well done.
(Spoken) Good Bye, Adieu, Aufwiedersehen, AuRevoir,  to you and you and you!

Yvonne's Poem

DO - a door we all walked through, to meet and greet some friends anew.
RE - The raves each one of us received and no one was omitted and no one was deceived.
ME - A name we called our selves - no fuss!  But we preferred, as time went by, to simply call ourselves as "US".
FA - The road we traveled down to make our show exactly right!  And at the end we found our guests, enjoyed with pure delight!
SO - The sewing was a  task that Alisa and Erin took on, that left the audience in awe and for our seamstress's a job well done.
LA - Is for the laughter, the love and loud applause, that made us oh so satisfied, even with some flaws!
TI - Is for the time and tireless hours spent, By our talented directors for this glorious event.

Now, let's go on and start again, but not with DO -RE -ME!  Let's see what we can do with the letters of ABC!

A - is for our actors ,each one a pure delight!  They kept our show so powerful, every day and night!
B - is for BEN TUTOR, who took upon the chore, Of scenery and set design, who could ask for anything more?
C- is for CANDICE, blessed with talent galore.  To work with her is joyful, and oh so much, much more.
C - is also for the chorus, provided by the children.  Laughs, and songs and smiles -- worth more than many millions.
D - is for the directors -- JUDY,  JANZELL and CANDICE -- so totally efficient, made our show so much, much more than simply just sufficient.
D - is also for Dorene and Dan, who ran the Von Trapp house.  Dorene was oh so very sweet -- but Dan became a Nazi grouse!
E - is for exhaustion, experienced by all.  But each one kept on going and declined to crawl or fall.
F - is for new friendships we were privileged to know, and over time, we hope, our  friendship will continue to grow.
G - is for the Germans who attitudes were tough.  Aren't we glad that we don't deal today with that kind of stuff?
H - is for Herr Zeller and also Herr Von Schreiber.  Our thanks to both of you, because you both are so much nicer.
I -  is for the incident that might be called a boner!  Like the lad who lost his shirt --- OH MY!  Could it have been Jonah?
J -  is for JUDY -- a real work and a wonder.  How she did it all, makes us gratefully ponder.
J -  is also for JANZELL - what a talent, what a voice.  To work with her gives one reason to happily rejoice.
K -  is for the kindness for the Relief Societys of each ward.  who fed us at our rehearsals, may they gain a great reward.
L -  is for the lovers -- for Ali and Drew - how could you miss?  And what about that scene that ended with a kiss!
M - is for Maria - a voice so sweet and true.  A part played to perfecton by APRIL, and never missed a cue.
M - is also for MATT, or MAX or whatever name you call him.  He's mighty, majestic and masterful or any other synonym.
N - is for the nuns (and postulants) so sweet and very innocent.  And Robin's "Climb Every Mountain" was truly so omnificent.
O - is for the orchestra, John's talents were apparent.  Of course we know, they were probably inherent.
O - is also for Cory and Eli, your drum and bass at time, helped to make our orchestra superb and more than prime.
P - is for our pianists, each performance they did shine.  Each song they played made each number so real and so divine.
Q - is for the quality of our show that was A number one.  With music, acting and livley groups that we all enjoyed the fun.
R - is for Robin, our Choreographer who has always loved to dance.  And she taught so very perfect there was nothing left to chance.
S - is for the stage manager - a person perfect for the job.  As GERRI COOMBS directed and helped the stage crew mob.
S - is also for the sound techs, a very trying call.  But all went well as Leon and John performed their where with all.
T - is for the talent each one of you were blessed with.  Please share it in your life to come is our desired wish.
U - is for united, we became as cast and crew, and as directors and leaders we came to love each one of you.
V - is for the Von Trapp children, a family so sweet and fair.  Their voices were so beautiful and there are none who can compare.
W - is for WADE -- a stiff and rigid father.  Who changed much for the better as his family he did gather.
X - is for the extras who donated energy and time, in painting, cosmetology, publicity and lighting so sublime.
Y - is for the Young Women who in the nursery tended - the children of the cast members until rehearsal ended.
Z - is for the zeal each person professionally portrayed.  Whether acting, singing or dancing, you truly made the grade.
Directing, music, stage crew, scenery or props.  Everyone was always there and never thought to stop.
We know each one of you was more than just an implement and we as directors know,  you deserve the  greatest compliment.
Well now our show is over and our lives are so routine, but memories of what we did will stay within our dreams.
To each of you we give our thanks for every job well done.  Good-bye, Au Revoir, Adieu and Auf Wiederschen to you, and you and you.

Loose Ends

Thanks everyone for a great party!  We will be posting Yvonne's song and poem on the blog later if you didn't get a chance to hear it.  Any valuable looking Lost & Found items are now in the Millstream/Ridgedale building's library's Lost & Found, so if you want to check it out you'll have to arrange to visit during their library hours.

Candice will be finishing the photo CD and the video.  You can purchase them for $2 each.  If you have any questions about this, please contact her.

I'm sad to see it all end, but happy for the lifelong friendships made.  I know our paths won't cross as frequently, but we will always be connected by this great experience!  Thank you everyone!

Cast Party Details

I hope you've all had a chance for some R&R and are ready to get together for our SOUND OF MUSIC Cast Party!  As you're probably all aware, it will be held this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Millstream/Ridgedale building.  Please feel free to bring your immediate family.  RSVP required -- please email me (Judy)  if you are coming and how many people you plan to bring.  I need a final count by THURSDAY night.

We do need your help!  We will be having a POTLUCK DESSERT BUFFET and would like everyone to pitch in.  We just want it to be simple for everyone, so we'd like each family/individual to bring 1 - 2 dozen of their favorite baked treat.  I was going to make assignments, but I don't have the energy. ;)  Just try to be a little creative so we don't have 1,000 brownies!

If anyone can help set up tables and chairs on Thursday night at 8 p.m., please meet us over at the Millstream/Ridgedale building.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Tonight's Rehearsal (4-25-12)

Tonight is a very important rehearsal. We are going to run the whole show without stopping! Please make sure that you are ready for the opening prayer at 6 p.m. If you need to get ready at the church you'll need to arrive before 6 p.m. Judy will have the church doors open at 5 p.m. Tonight everyone needs to be in their costumes!

With the amount of costume changes we have and the amount of people changing, we are going to move the men's dressing room to the north hallway next to the men's restroom. We will then open the seperater in the women's dressing room to give them more room. Sorry gentleman, but because April has the most costume changes, we'll be keeping the clothing rack in the south hallway.

For tonight only, the adults in the show will be allowed to come into the gym to quiety watch. If you will be watching, you must keep track of when you enter the stage. No one will be allowed to enter the stage from their seats in the audience. If you are someone who crosses to stage left during a curtain closure, you must do that tonight. You cannot reach stage left from the audience. The sound of the show will be played into the Relief Society room so those in there can listen for their entrances.

Please remember to bring PAPER AND SOMETHING TO WRITE WITH tonight so you can write down notes that are given to you. We will be taking a lot of notes tonight. We will not yell direction or corrections from the audience anymore, we will give full notes at the end. After the curtain call everyone needs to go straight to the Relief Society room for notes. You can gather up your stuff and change out of your costume after notes.

Please help each other remember that the more you are focused on what is going on the easier and more fun the production will be. Tonight is not a time for playing around or running around the church.

We as a production staff are very proud of the talent and effort that has been put in by each of you. We hope that you are as excited as we are to perform this wonderful show. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

Saturday Rehearsal 4/21

Please remember that Saturday rehearsal starts at 8 a.m. SHARP and will go until 3 p.m.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Children's Chorus girls should bring their white dresses to change in and out of.  If possible (and convenient), please wear your costume but you are welcome to bring a change of clothing.

*** Remember, YOU and you alone are responsible for your clothing.  You will need to bring your clothes and take them home and  launder and iron them if necessary.   If you know your costume was loaned to you by someone, then please take extra SPECIAL care of it.  We will NOT be able to store costumes at the ward and I (Judy) will not be the Lost and Found, so it is your job to take everything home with you after rehearsals.  Parents,  if you are concerned about your younger children managing this on their own, please be sure to help them when dropping them off/picking them up from rehearsal.

As for tomorrow, you WILL be needed the entire time, so bring something to do!  Book, iPad, homework, games, etc.  The live feed will be running in the RS room and there will be movies in the Primary room for the kids.

Meet Our Cast- Pt. 3

Robyn J. Mock - Mother Abbess
After having six children, Robyn never dreamed she would be a nun, let alone Mother Abbess! She is thrilled to have a part in The Sound of Music. She has sung professionally for about 24 years and has been involved with the Utah Symphony Chorus, Savannah Symphony Chorus, and with various recitals, musical revues, and musical and operetta productions throughout the years. She teaches and coaches voice students at her home and recently enjoyed her third run as ward choir director. It has been fun for her to perform musical theater music as a trio with Alece Ashcraft and Missy Hockemier. Robyn graduated from BYU with a degree in Humanities-English with a minor in French, with emphasis in art, music and history; but, she remains "purple" as she also has a degree from the University of Utah in English-Creative Writing. She is always involved with school, volunteering to teach art to the 4th grade and creating artwork for the musical productions at Evergreen. In her spare time, she enjoys making bobbin lace, baking bread and any dessert, writing her novels and doing family history. She would like to thank her husband, Shannon, for always supporting and promoting her talents and her children for sharing so much of what she loves in life.

Mondi Alailima Taumoefolau - Sister Berthe
Mondi has been performing onstage in both amateur and professional productions since the age of 13. She credits growing up Catholic in New Jersey and 4 years as a US Marine as the inspiration in her portrayal as the ever ascerbic (and pretentiously pious) Sister Berthe. Moving to Utah from the coast of SoCal in 2009, her favorite role by far has been, and always will be, being mom to Megan, 24, and Brandon, 14. She dedicates her performance to her children.

Alece Ashcraft - Sister Margaretta
The Sound of Music has always been one of Alece's favorites, so she has dusted off a few cobwebs and is happy to be back on the stage after many years. She and her husband, Leon, have eight children, three of which are in the show with her. She treasures the new friends and experiences she had in performing this show and in the past Grant Stake performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, From Cumorah's Hill and Traditions.

Not pictured: Karen Fairbourne - Sister Sophia

Dorene Loewer - Frau Schmidt
Dorene is delighted to return to the stage after a long absence, while she reared her children. Many years ago she was Frau Schmidt in the Promised Valley Playhouse production of The Sound of Music and also performed in Three Penny Opera at Theater 138 (unfortunately, most of you may not remember those wonderful old theaters). After 35 years, Dorene is retired from teaching French, German, English and business classes.

Not pictured: Dan Freebairn - Franz the Butler

Greg Lyman - Herr Zeller
Being in this musical is on Greg's bucket list and his role as archetypal villain Herr Zellar has been a lot of fun. You don't get to play the villain every day. Greg agrees with Brigham Young who said, "If I were placed on a cannibal island and given the task of civilizing its people, I should straightway build a theatre for that purpose." (Westward Expansion Quay p. 192) We all love and are shaped by theater and movies! Greg was in a roadshow every year of his teen years. He had the lead in his High School production of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, and was on his H.S.'s state championship drama team. He played Sir Thomas More in Bolt's A Man for All Season's. His mother's uncle won three Oscars (Leigh Harline) which tells you absolutely nothing about him! (in the photo, Greg is the tall one in the middle, his grandson is on the left).

Meet our Cast - pt. 2

Meet our von Trapp children... and come back later for more bios!

ALI ENGEBRETSEN
Liesel

Ali is excited to be back on the theater stage!   Her last stage performance was playing Glinda, in "The Wizard of Oz" in 2007.   Since then, Ali has studied Voice at the University of Utah, majoring in Music with an emphasis in Choral Education, with countless performances. She teaches private voice lessons and is grateful for her students for being patient with her rehearsal and performance schedule! Ali would like to thank her family for their unwavering support and attendance, Judy and Janzell for the opportunity of performing her dream role as Liesel, and is excited to be playing opposite her handsome, talented husband!

TAYNE MOCK
Friedrich

Tayne loves theater and is excited to be in "The Sound of Music."  He has been in "The Scarlet Pimpernel", "Hello Dolly", "Peter Pan", and "The Wizard of Oz" as well as some comedy and drama sketches on stage.  In his spare time, he loves creating visual art and sculpture, watching and filming movies, singing, dancing, and running.  He especially enjoys writing stories and poetry, history, archaeology, and travel.  Recently, he was accepted as a member of the Youth Humanities Council.  He would like to thank his mom for helping him find his voice and his dad for encouraging him to the best he can be.

BECCA MINSON
Louisa

JONAH ANDERSON
Kurt

Jonah has enjoyed being in plays since he was in first grade when he played a swamp monster in "Liza Lous." He is so excited to play Kurt in the stake play because he gets to sing and dance but still be a kid, which he thinks is the most fun prat you can act out.  He's loved getting to know his cast mates in "The Sound of Music" and can't wait to perform for a real audience.

ALEXIS BITNER
Brigitta

Alexis has taken voice lessons for the last 3 years. She started dance lessons at the age of three. She started with tap dancing then within a few years she went into clogging and ballroom. This is Alexis' first non dancing stage performance. She is excited to be a part of "The Sound of Music."

TASSE MOCK
Marta

Being Marta in "The Sound of Music" is a great thrill for Tasse.  She loves to perform on stage and had the lead role last year as Ping in "The Empty Pot", which she performed at the Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake City.  She has been in several other productions through school and church and always brings a lot of energy to the stage with her outgoing personality.  Her favorite pastimes are reading book after book, playing with and making friends, creating art masterpieces, singing at the top of her lungs, and cooking with her mom and dad.  She wants her family to know she loves them and that she is excited to have almost all of them in the musical with her!

ANNI KALAI
Gretl

Anni is a member of the Gregson Ward and is excited to be making her theatre debut.  She is 6 years old and has one younger brother.  Anni loves art and craft, riding her bike, and anything FUN.

Meet Our Cast - pt. 1

Get to know our wonderful Sound of Music cast.  Check back often for more bios...

APRIL HUNTINGTON
Maria Rainer

April grew up in the Grant Stake and is glad to be back again. She lives with her handsome husband and two adorable children. In college, April sang with BYU Concert Choir and after graduating was asked to join the U of U Singers for a season and travel to Europe, where they won the world championship! It has been a number of years since April performed in a musical, but some past roles she has played include: a Narrator in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", Mrs. Harcourt in "Anything Goes", and a nun in "The Sound of Music!"  Being a stay-at-home-mom is the biggest part of April's current life, but she also enjoys whole foods cooking and teaching voice lessons, reading, and being outside when it's warm.

WADE HANSEN
Captain Georg von Trapp

This is Wade's first trip back to the stage in nearly a decade -- after realizing the musical theater degree he was pursuing at BYU probably wasn't going to be the ticket to providing for a family. Now, one wonderful wife and four fantastic sons later, he's excited to be playing the role of Captain von Trapp. Wade was a member of BYU's Young Ambassadors and has played the roles of  Jinx and  Frankie in "Forever Plaid", Charlie in "Brigadoon", Matt in "The Fantasticks", and Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."

CANDICE JORGENSEN
Elsa Shrader

Candice has been performing since before she could walk. She has performed on stages throughout the valley including Hale Centre Theatre, Rogers Memorial Theater, Midvale City Arts & Murray City Arts to name a few. Past favorite roles include The Cat in the Hat in "Suessical the Musical" and Annabelle in "Lucky Stiff." Her first solo was when she was five years old singing "Edelweiss" and is excited to be involved with the musical that started her love of theater. She's thankful for the loving support of her husband and son for letting her come and play.

MATT MARGETTS
Max Detweiller

Matt has been performing here in the Grant Stake since he was a youth when he played the role of Fydka in "The Fiddler on the Roof." When he moved back into the stake as an adult with his own family in 1991, he has been participating ever since. He truly enjoys getting to know other members of the stake family by doing these shows and has many close friends who he met through these great productions – both old & young.  He says, "It is a great blessing in my life to be associated with such a great cast! Thanks to all those associated with 'The Sound of Music.' Much love to my beautiful wife, Christy, and my children and their spouses. We’re going to knock your socks off!"

No Rehearsal Saturday!

Enjoy Conference and your Saturday off!  We'll see you for the Act 1 run through on Thursday, 4/5.  Rehearsals are mandatory in April and start at 6 p.m. on Thursdays.  Plan on staying until 9 p.m. for notes, except the Children's Chorus will be let go after the party scene around 8:30 p.m.

NO scripts -- everything should be memorized.

Party Scene Costumes

We are asking everyone in the party scene to please help us out by finding their own costumes.   PLEASE do not feel like you need to make something or go out and buy something unless it's from the D.I. or another thrift store.  Try borrowing clothes and let us know if you cannot find something, so we can help.

Women
We prefer more muted or darker in color or pastels without garish prints.  If you have a formal dress then you are welcome to wear that.  Absolutely no spaghetti straps or sleeveless dresses unless you wear an appropriate shawl, stole or jacket to cover your shoulders.  If you do not have a formal, than a long dress or under the knee/calf length "Sunday Dress" is all right.  Blouses and skirts are okay too.

Tyrolean costumes will be great as long as they aren't very bright colors.  Here's an example:

For formal/Sunday dresses, accessories can include diamonds, pearls, white gloves, shawls, fur stole or jacket.  We do have some wrist length white gloves in our costume storage that you could try.

Please don't wear heels as they can noisily click.  Please wear your black or dark flats or character shoes, if you have them.

Teen Girls
If you want, you can follow the guidelines of the women's clothing and wear a more mature outfit, but we also encourage you to wear more of a "Liesel-type" party dress if you have one.  These should still be more muted, but pastels will work too.  Dresses can be knee length.  You would wear natural colored tights/nylons and black/dark flats.

Men & Teen Boys
You can wear a white shirt, dark or grey suit and a tie, but the tie should be dark or muted color and conservative.  You can wear a hankerchief in your pocket.  If you do not have a suit, you can wear a jacket and pants - but no Dockers.  They need to be dark.  You can also wear a white shirt, a vest, and tie.

Children
Girls can wear their white dresses and dress it up with a cardigan or shawl, or they can change into a party dress or Tyrolean dress, that is a more muted color or pastel.  Boys will wear a white shirt, black pants and tie (I think we're providing the tie).  If you want to add something, you can wear suspenders or a vest.
