Auditions This Week

Just a reminder that Open Auditions are this week.  You can come anytime between 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, 2/2 or 9 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, 2/4.  Auditions will be held at the Millstream/Ridgedale Building on 3400 South 1100 East (right across from the Stake Park) in the Relief Society Room.  Please see the audition information and packet in the IMPORTANT INFORMATION section on the right side of the blog.  **Note: I included that I would post the sheet music of the chorus for "Do Re Mi" in case children wanted to use that for their auditions; however, due to to copyright issues, I am not allowed.  Children are welcome to sing another song of their choice.

Also, I've received multiple inquiries asking if people who live outside the Grant Stake neighborhood boundaries are allowed to audition -- be it a family member or a friend.  As great as it would be to be able to include these people, we have decided that we are limiting participation to those in the boundaries.  We wish we could make exceptions, but we feel it's important to keep our focus within the stake area.

Volunteer Opportunities

UPDATED JANUARY 31st!!!!
We will need a LOT of behind the scenes help to put on a quality production.  If you are interested in helping in any of the following areas, please leave a comment or email grantstakemusical@gmail.com.

Production Assistant(s)
We need one or two people to coordinate all administrative functions including maintaining the cast lists, audition packets, and rehearsal schedules.  Will make copies and keep notes.  Will manage scripts and music.  Will communicate with cast and crew over blog, email, and/or phone calls.  Will not need to be at all rehearsals as much of the work will be done on own time.

Choreographer(s)
We need either a main choreographer and an assistant or a small team to co-choreograph the show and help characters with staging and movement.  Will need to attend all rehearsals in March and April.

Accompanist
We need one more person to be a main accompanist for the show.  The accompaniment includes 2 pianos.  We have 2 already and need one more to rotate playing the music.  This person will also accompany the Children's chorus during the prelude and intermission.  Will need to attend all rehearsals in February, March and April.

Orchestra
Exact details to be determined, but we will have a small orchestra of just bass and percussion to go with the 2 pianos.  Check back for more info...

Set Construction / Scenery Artists / Scenic Carpenters
We are looking for a crew to help construct the sets and/or paint.  There will be a few designated evenings and/or Saturdays in April to put all the scenery together.

Stage Manager(s)
We need one or two stage managers who will help things run smoothly on stage and during the production.  Will help record blocking and cues.  Will assist in communicating with the stage, lighting, and sound crew. Will make sure actors know when it is time to go on stage.  Will need to attend all rehearsals in March and April.

Stage Mamas (or Papas)
We need a few parents who are not in the cast or crew to help with the Children's Chorus during the last week of rehearsals in April and during performances.  Will help them with costumes, make-up, keeping them quiet, and help with their cues.  We will rotate responsibility so you will still be able to attend performances.

Stage, Lighting & Sound Crew
We need a crew of people to help behind the scenes during production including scene changes, curtains, and preparing/cleaning up stage.  Will also handle lighting and sound.  Will need to start attending all rehearsals in the middle of April.

**** Costume Crew & Seamstresses
This show has a LOT of costume, so we need a lot of people.  We need a crew of costume coordinators.  Will help in costuming the characters including renting, finding and/or purchasing costumes and fabric.  We need a group of people who can help the cast during dress rehearsals and performances with getting ready and assisting with any quick changes.  We will also need seamstresses to sew costumes.  Most of this will be done in your own time and not require attendance at rehearsals until the very end.

Hair & Make-up Crew
We need a group of people who will help with all aspects of hair and make-up for the show which will include applying make-up, styling hair, and keeping make-up area clean.  These people will need to be available during dress rehearsals and performances.

Prop Crew
We need a few people to help find and coordinate props for the production.  These people will not need to attend regular rehearsals, but will need to be a couple of people to help during dress rehearsals and performances and work with stage crew to manage use of props.

Mark Your Calendars...

Well if you're here, you must have heard that the Grant Stake is producing a musical!  We are in the final stage of licensing an exciting show, but since I'm superstitious I won't be making an official announcement until this weekend.  I can tell you that a lot of work has gone into choosing the right show and I hope you'll all be as excited as I am.  Check back here this weekend or look for more information in the foyer of your ward building.

For those of you who have a compulsive need to plan ahead like I do, here are some dates to save:

  • Open Auditions: Thursday, February 2nd from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 4th from 9 - 10:30 a.m.  No need to schedule an audition.  They will be on a first come, first serve basis.  More audition details to come.
  • Rehearsals will be on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings.  Principal actors will rehearse in February, but group rehearsals start March 1st.  The last week before performances we will rehearse Tuesday 4/24, Wednesday 4/25, and Thursday, 4/26.
  • Performances will be Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
I already know there is a big concern for those kids (and parents) involved in the Evergreen Middle School production.  Trust me, I took these dates into serious consideration but this is the best time to do this show for many reasons that I won't bore you with here.   I realize this may be a conflict for many of you, but we worked around Evergreen's show 4 years ago during our "State Fair" production and we'll do it again.  If you want to be involved in the cast and crew, we will do our best to accommodate you and/or you can join the cast when your other show is done.

That being said, I also ask you to take YOUR schedule into serious consideration.  I will work hard to accommodate you and your family, church, work, and school commitments, but I ask you in return to make every effort to attend all rehearsals.  I want a cast and crew that is willing to do their best and will be committed to the show.  If you find that your schedule is just too hectic or you have too many previous time commitments, please consider getting involved in a smaller capacity like joining the chorus or helping behind the scenes.

This is exciting!  Stay tuned for more details...
