Meet Our Cast - pt. 1

Get to know our wonderful Sound of Music cast.  Check back often for more bios...

APRIL HUNTINGTON
Maria Rainer

April grew up in the Grant Stake and is glad to be back again. She lives with her handsome husband and two adorable children. In college, April sang with BYU Concert Choir and after graduating was asked to join the U of U Singers for a season and travel to Europe, where they won the world championship! It has been a number of years since April performed in a musical, but some past roles she has played include: a Narrator in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", Mrs. Harcourt in "Anything Goes", and a nun in "The Sound of Music!"  Being a stay-at-home-mom is the biggest part of April's current life, but she also enjoys whole foods cooking and teaching voice lessons, reading, and being outside when it's warm.

WADE HANSEN
Captain Georg von Trapp

This is Wade's first trip back to the stage in nearly a decade -- after realizing the musical theater degree he was pursuing at BYU probably wasn't going to be the ticket to providing for a family. Now, one wonderful wife and four fantastic sons later, he's excited to be playing the role of Captain von Trapp. Wade was a member of BYU's Young Ambassadors and has played the roles of  Jinx and  Frankie in "Forever Plaid", Charlie in "Brigadoon", Matt in "The Fantasticks", and Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."

CANDICE JORGENSEN
Elsa Shrader

Candice has been performing since before she could walk. She has performed on stages throughout the valley including Hale Centre Theatre, Rogers Memorial Theater, Midvale City Arts & Murray City Arts to name a few. Past favorite roles include The Cat in the Hat in "Suessical the Musical" and Annabelle in "Lucky Stiff." Her first solo was when she was five years old singing "Edelweiss" and is excited to be involved with the musical that started her love of theater. She's thankful for the loving support of her husband and son for letting her come and play.

MATT MARGETTS
Max Detweiller

Matt has been performing here in the Grant Stake since he was a youth when he played the role of Fydka in "The Fiddler on the Roof." When he moved back into the stake as an adult with his own family in 1991, he has been participating ever since. He truly enjoys getting to know other members of the stake family by doing these shows and has many close friends who he met through these great productions – both old & young.  He says, "It is a great blessing in my life to be associated with such a great cast! Thanks to all those associated with 'The Sound of Music.' Much love to my beautiful wife, Christy, and my children and their spouses. We’re going to knock your socks off!"

No Rehearsal Saturday!

Enjoy Conference and your Saturday off!  We'll see you for the Act 1 run through on Thursday, 4/5.  Rehearsals are mandatory in April and start at 6 p.m. on Thursdays.  Plan on staying until 9 p.m. for notes, except the Children's Chorus will be let go after the party scene around 8:30 p.m.

NO scripts -- everything should be memorized.

Party Scene Costumes

We are asking everyone in the party scene to please help us out by finding their own costumes.   PLEASE do not feel like you need to make something or go out and buy something unless it's from the D.I. or another thrift store.  Try borrowing clothes and let us know if you cannot find something, so we can help.

Women
We prefer more muted or darker in color or pastels without garish prints.  If you have a formal dress then you are welcome to wear that.  Absolutely no spaghetti straps or sleeveless dresses unless you wear an appropriate shawl, stole or jacket to cover your shoulders.  If you do not have a formal, than a long dress or under the knee/calf length "Sunday Dress" is all right.  Blouses and skirts are okay too.

Tyrolean costumes will be great as long as they aren't very bright colors.  Here's an example:

For formal/Sunday dresses, accessories can include diamonds, pearls, white gloves, shawls, fur stole or jacket.  We do have some wrist length white gloves in our costume storage that you could try.

Please don't wear heels as they can noisily click.  Please wear your black or dark flats or character shoes, if you have them.

Teen Girls
If you want, you can follow the guidelines of the women's clothing and wear a more mature outfit, but we also encourage you to wear more of a "Liesel-type" party dress if you have one.  These should still be more muted, but pastels will work too.  Dresses can be knee length.  You would wear natural colored tights/nylons and black/dark flats.

Men & Teen Boys
You can wear a white shirt, dark or grey suit and a tie, but the tie should be dark or muted color and conservative.  You can wear a hankerchief in your pocket.  If you do not have a suit, you can wear a jacket and pants - but no Dockers.  They need to be dark.  You can also wear a white shirt, a vest, and tie.

Children
Girls can wear their white dresses and dress it up with a cardigan or shawl, or they can change into a party dress or Tyrolean dress, that is a more muted color or pastel.  Boys will wear a white shirt, black pants and tie (I think we're providing the tie).  If you want to add something, you can wear suspenders or a vest.

Children's Chorus Costumes - Girls

Many have asked me to clarify what the girls will be wearing for the Children's Chorus and the Party Scene.  For the Children's Chorus, they will be wearing white dresses with blue satin sashes, white tights/nylons and black shoes.  For the Party Scene, they can wear the same outfit, add a cardigan or shawl, or they can change into another party dress that is preferably pastel without big print.

We are hoping you either have a white dress or can borrow one.  Preferably it is a "party" or "Sunday" type dress that is knee or calf length, modest sleeve, etc.  If you're in doubt of whether or not your dress will work, please bring it to rehearsal.

We don't want anyone going out and buying a new white dress just for this (unless it's at the D.I.).  We have a few people who have offered to let people borrow white dresses and we will put the word out to the stake if we need more.  If you have a white blouse and a white skirt, that will probably work too.  Or if you have one or the other, we can see about getting you the other half.

We will provide the blue satin sashes.

Boy information will come soon....

Pianist Needed!

We are in desperate need of a pianist.  Our musical arrangement is for 2 pianos = 4 pianists splitting up the parts.  We are having a difficult time securing a 4th pianist.  We need this person to rehearse for the next 5 weeks of the production on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings (except 3/31 - conference and on 4/21 the rehearsal goes until 3 p.m.).  The week of performnces we will need them Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening.  Performances are Friday and Saturday.

Please let me know if you are interested or can give me a recommendation of someone in the stake boundaries.

We are looking for some harder to find props for the show.  If you have any of them that we could use (or know where we could get them) please let us know.  We will be careful with your items but please take into consideration that they will get used in the show as a prop.  We would hate for something to happen to real sentimental or valuable items.

Sewing Day

Our awesome Costume Directors, Erin Taylor and Alisa Woicicki, are organizing a "Sewing Day" on Saturday, March 24th from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Millstream/Ridgedale building.  They are looking for people to come and sew costumes for the play.  They will provide the patterns, fabric and thread, but you would need to bring your sewing machine.  It would also be a good idea to bring your scissors and straight pins.  If you don't have a sewing machine, but would still like to  help you are welcome to come and someone will surely share their machine!

If you have any questions, please contact Erin or Alisa.

Last Week to Join Cast!

March 8th is the drop-dead date people can join the Sound of Music cast.  After that, we've got to go full-speed ahead on costumes, rehearsals, etc.  We especially need:

  • Several more teen boys (ages 14+) to be Nazi Soldiers/Party Guests.  Adult men are also encouraged to join for the same role.
  • Teen (14+) and Women alto singers to be either Nun/Party Guest or Postulant/Party Guest.  Other singers are welcome, but we really need some more altos.
Contact Judy if you're interested.
